The Ruby Spirit leave a positive impression and hunger for more wherever they may roam. In 2009, RS was hand-picked by Virgin mogul, Sir Richard Branson, as one of the top five ‘Best Indie Bands’ in Canada through the ‘Oh Henry’ sponsored contest to play VirginFest. That summer they also won Toronto‘s Independent Music Award, “Best Indie Band” for their vibrant live show. By 2010 the band was chosen to play at the launch of Canadian Music Fest at the Mod Club to a crowd of 700 people.
In the fall of 2010 The Ruby Spirit released their debut record, “Born Under a Veil” to a crowd of 500 eager fans at The Great Hall in Toronto. Since then the band has garnered a furry of glowing reviews from independent blogs and printed newspapers for their ambitious and breakthrough brand of alternative pop. There are no signs of looking back.
Where It Began:
It all starts in the East end of Toronto, Canada where these young upstarts make their magic. Rehearsing, writing and recording non-stop in their own band house, rescued from demolition. The lyrical snide and wit of ringleader Paige Boy makes it impossible to turn a deaf ear. By some, she has been described as the love child of Liza Minnelli and Patti Smith, combining a spectrum of character voices, with commanding stage power.
Paige spent most of her early life in a musician’s household. She participated in theater produc- tions and romanced with the allure and raw talent of Lena Horne, Cab Calloway and Jackie Wilson from an assortment of dusty old tapes. Together her and Alex create a songwriting team that, with the band, is a force to be reckoned with. Oozing with wisdom well beyond their young years and the confidence of seasoned performers, “We’re not afraid to be ourselves. We figure if you’re going to make music, put yourself out there, be who you are. If you’re not striving to make something new, what’s the point? Being fearless is essential for growth as a human and definitely as a band”.
The Future:
All the energy and confidence is streaming like fireflies. Eager to set their sights South of the border and across the pond, RS have began playing Manhattan, where they feel their music belongs. It’s no wonder why fans mistake the Ruby Spirit as a band from London or New York City. “I tell myself there is nowhere on this earth I would rather be than right here, now, playing music. “Be Here Now” is our mantra, there is always energy to draw from, no matter how many sleepless nights.”
